Magical Cape Town Beaches

Cape Town offers some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet, with sunny white beaches stretching east to west. It’s no surprise that many of South Africa’s beaches have been awarded the blue flag status, given only to the most perfect beaches of the world. Part of the allure of this area is that this is where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet. The Atlantic lies on the west side and is about 4 degrees cooler. Many of the most popular beaches lie on this side of the coast, with many referring to it as South Africa’s “Riviera”. These beaches are lucky to have longer days and protection for the Cape winds, making them a very pleasant experience indeed.

One of the most notable is Clifton which is comprised of 4 beaches all together, it is no doubt one of the most fashionable beaches. The wealthy all aspire to own homes fronting its snow white sands and people fly from all over to see and be seen against the backdrop of the bright blue water, decorated with gleaming white yachts.

The East coast however has the warmer water with many hidden and secluded gems, which tourists travel from far and wide to experience. These are also preferred by local families wanting to steer clear of the crowds along the west coast. Each beach has its own particular charm however, so it’s always best to go to a few and decide which is most suited to your tastes.

If you are thinking about visiting this side of the world you are sure to be left with more than just a glowing tan, but fond memories of this captivating region and the hospitable people which reside in it. There is a wide array of accommodation options you can take advantage of such as SelfCatering Accommodation & Holiday Rentals or hotels. There is plenty to choose from and they line the coast, offering a wonderful way to experience the sun and surf offered by Cape Town, South Africa.

Gansbaai accommodation, a lone fisherman and a colony of Geese.

Gansbaai accommodation is today rather luxurious compared to its humble beginnings. Although archaeologists suggest that early accommodation in Gansbaai started long before the arrival of the young man in this story, with cave dwelling hunter gatherers many thousands of years ago, it is the story of Johannes Cornelis Wessels that truly lends Gansbaai much of its present day character and indeed much its current lineage.

Young Cornelis, just 18 at the time, walked from Stanford over the dunes to what was to become Gansbaai. This is a mere twenty minute car trip today but in 1881 when the journey was undertaken this was no doubt a more difficult by foot over the hot sand dunes with the relentless winds that savage the area. Now Corenlis was a keen fisherman, in fact it was all he did. He belonged to a group of nomadic fishermen that were common along that coast in the late 19th century. Young Cornelis arrived at this lonely bay with the clothes on his back and a fishing rod, so legend has it. There was no sign of any other inhabitants and certainly no inkling of the accommodation in Gansbaai that we see today. Despite this he did what any good fisherman would do when arriving at a new undiscovered spot and cast a line. Now I don't know much about fishing but what happened next is a clear indication in my mind that the fishing was good. Johannes Cornelis Wessels built himself a house and never left.
The fishing was so good in Gansbaai, accommodation was needed immediately. So it was all due to a good days fishing that the community this community was formed. A fisherman desperate for a private fishing spot and fishing so good it required instant accommodation. Gansbaai might not have been what it is today if young Cornelis had had a bad day of fishing back in 1882. Thankfully today the choice of accommodation consists of slightly more than the stone, daub and reed house he made for himself. In fact today for the modern traveller hoping to find that secret fishing spot that attracted Cornelis over a century ago there is no shortage of accommodation. The coastal waters around Gansbaai are still considered some the best fishing in the country.

Unwittingly Cornelis was also starting what was to become a fierce local fishing scene, which is understandable as the fishing is good and the town was built on a tradition of protecting your fishing spot.

At the time of Cornelis' discovery that costal region was part of a farm known as Strandfontein, meaning beach fountain, named for the fresh water fountain by the harbour which provided fresh drinking water to the community. A family of geese had taken up residents in this fountain and it wasn't long before the area became known as Gansgat which means "goose hole," -Only a fisherman- It didn't take long before it was changed to the more respectable Gansbaai, goose bay.

The Southern Right Whale seeks nursery accommodation, Witsand happy to oblige.

There is a small coastal town just off the N2, in the area of the Western Cape known as the garden route that hosts an annual whaling spectacular the likes of which can’t be witnessed anywhere else in the world. At the right time of year in this small sleepy town, called Witsand, accommodation is inundated with Whale enthusiasts.

The whales that congregate in this area for calving purposes every year are considered to be the least understood of all the species, they have inhabited the southern oceans for over 60 million years and are said to have the most highly evolved brain of all mammalian species. Every year from June to late November they move from the Southern Atlantic Ocean to the coastal regions off South Africa, Australia and South America. The region along the southern coast has some of the best viewing of these gentle giants and by all accounts the best of these is Witsand. Accommodation in this normally sleepy town can become hard to find at this time of year due to the popularity of watching the new mothers with their calves.

In 2005 a survey counted 130 whales and 51 calves a massive number considering that they have been a protected species for barely 40 years. The region along this particular stretch of coast is sparsely populated and other than in the town of Witsand, accommodation can be hard to find so booking in advance is important if you wish to witness this spectacleoflife.

The calving is a natural complement to an area that is already full of beauty. Witsand means White Sand which is simply a reference to the brilliantly white sandy beach that hems in the town. This eye catching phenomenon is caused by an underground water supply that leeches the red iron oxide out of the sand leaving it bleached white. What makes this even more striking is the fact that the town sits on the mouth of the Breede River whose muddy brown water spills onto the dazzling white beaches of Witsand. Accommodation can be found all the way up the BreedeRiver and the historical Pont can be found near Malgas. This historical river crossing is still in use today. The roads in this area, however, are not well maintained and getting around can take time and could require a 4x4.

If you are after coastal activities it would be most practical to find Witsand accommodation, the river estuary formed by the river mouth provides a safe location for a range of activities, including windsurfing, swimming, paddle-skiing and fishing. These waters provide some of the best fishing in South Africa, the most common catch been the Spotted Grunter. Garrick, Shad and Steenbras are also commonly caught. Most Witsand accommodation owners are happy to provide you with information about the best fishing spots or even offer a charter service.

Perhaps the strangest thing you could experience at Witsand is what the locals call Brulsand which, in English means Roaring Sands, when the wind blows just right and the dunes start to move they release an eerie low rumbling noise. Finding Witsand accommodation is finding a place to share in natures wonders.

Tips For Finding Accommodation In Green Point

Green Point is possibly one of the most vibrant parts of Cape Town and unfortunately often over looked by tourists when looking for accommodation. Green Point sits on the slopes of signal hill and spills down to the coast at Mouille Point. It is hemmed in on its eastern side by the City bowl and the V&A Waterfront and its western side by Sea Point. It has a vibrant night life popular with the gay community and is host to some of the finest dining establishments in the country. Accommodation in Green Point is plentiful since the world cup and ranges from backpackers to boutique hotels.

Choosing accommodation in Green Point is an obvious choice for anyone wishing to be close to the city without having to put up with the noise that comes with staying in any city centre. Its a short bus or shared taxi ride or even a walk on a sunny day and you are out of the city and onto the caf lined Main Road of Green Point. The steep lanes that lead you off the main road up onto the slopes of signal hill are often lined with trees providing shade and in some of the older area around the Cape Quarter are even cobbled. This is where youll find some the best accommodation Green Point has to offer.

The proximity to the CBD is ideal for business travellers, the international convention centre is only a short taxi drive away and the choice of restaurants provide excellent opportunities to host business meetings. Almost all the accommodation in Green Point provides internet access but if this is a necessity it is best to check before hand to ensure that it will be available. After a long day of meetings however youll find it hard to stay away from the famous night life of Green Point main road.

Green Point is perhaps most famous for the stadium that was recently built to host the Cape Town games of the 2010 world cup. The tournament was largely responsible for turning the area around. It was always a place of natural beauty and popular with locals, its many charms though were often missed or ignored by tourists. It became infamous for its prostitutes and drug dealers, as well as its vagrant population. With the advent of the world cup the local council set about cleaning up the area, sometimes controversially. A result of this was the many guesthouses and boutique hotels which opened up as home owners and local entrepreneurs realised that accommodation in Green Point was sorely lacking.

It would be wrong to say that Green Point is growing as it doesnt really have anywhere to grow unless it starts spilling out into the sea. There is however an aspect of it that is growing and thats the accommodation. Green Point is becoming an increasingly attractive option for overseas visitors. Its proximity to the city and the ocean, its vibrant night life, world class restaurants and above all its excellent accommodation are all helping it become one more popular stop on the Cape Town tourist map.

Keeping safe in Cape Town

For those planning to stay in the many luxurious Cape Town villas scattered all over the city, here are a few tips to make sure your stay is nothing short of amazing:

# If you are planning to take the cable car up Table Mountain, be sure to check if there is a white cloud draped over the top of the mountain, this cloud is know as the tablecloth, you may be able to see it from your Capetown villa. If the table cloth is spread over the mountain then rather leave the cable car for another day, as once up there all that you are sure to see is cloud rather then a view.
# When taking photo's, choose to take them in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the harsh bright light, if you are using film, remember to always keep your film cool.
# As in all other cities, tourists are the prime target for theft, always remain alert and be sure to take precautions.
# Avoid flashing money and credit cards around and wearing excessive amounts of jewellery.
# It is best to keep your bag strapped across your chest and shoulder so that it hangs in front of you, rather than behind you where you cannot monitor it.
# Walking around in the daytime is usually safe, but avoid walking around at night, especially if you are alone.
# Keep your car doors locked at all times, whether driving or parked outside your villa in Cape Town.
#  Don't leave your possessions in plain sight when you park your car, windows are often smashed to get to these possessions. # Rather leave your belongings in the boot, out of sight.
# Don't leave items unattended when at the beach.

You wouldn't want a silly thing such as paranoia to spoil an otherwise incredible holiday and although you may be staying in one of the magnificent Cape Townvilla rentals, you wouldn't want paranoia to dictate that you never leave your Cape Townvilla.

Be sure to exercise precaution and everything should be fine.

Know the Positives and the Negatives of a Cape Town Property

Buying a property is not always an easy process. It is very easy to find many good reasons to buy a Cape Town property. However, no matter how much you love the location the process of buying any property must take into consideration a number of important factors. If you are on the verge of looking for a Cape Town property be sure you have the right kind of help. The high demand for a Cape Town property has resulted in a thriving real estate industry. However, it is important to choose an agent who has personal knowledge of your chosen location.

You want someone who knows all the positive aspects of a specific location as well as the negative ones. It does make sense to have an alternative choice of location and a Cape Town property just in case the chosen area and property does not meet all your requirements. If you are looking for a Cape Town property it may be a good idea to keep an open mind. It is much harder to find a home that is to your exact specifications. In most instances a property seeker must be flexible. For example, you may have to compromise on the size of a garden in order to get a Cape Town property with an uninterrupted view of the ocean.

Often, there is limited space on a seafront and so the garden may be smaller. You may even have to do without a garden and opt for a smaller patio if the Cape Town property is built on the side of a cliff. In such instances, the view is spectacular and the homes have such large windows that it makes up for a garden. It is highly likely your private patio would have a plunge pool or hot tub. The lack of garden space need not spoil your lifestyle.

Not every person wants a Cape Town property with a view of the ocean. There are locations such as Newlands, Bishops Court and Constantia that have breathtaking views of Table Mountain. This side of the mountain is lush and green and in these areas a Cape Town property will have a large garden to fit the generous proportions of the houses. Those who prefer a flat will find there are more available in the suburb of Newlands. However, this suburb is leafy and small and so whether a Cape Town property is a large house or flat they are scarcer than in the larger suburbs. It would be hard to find a part of this city where a Cape Town property would be turned down. However, it is important to find the right home in the right location for you. This is why you should make use of a knowledgeable agent. Not only must the agent know the area but he must also understand your needs. Whether you are a single individual, a retired couple, living together, newlyweds, a family or getting divorced you need an agent who can handle any situation. In the end, you want a smooth transaction that gives you the Cape Town property you want, in the area you want.
